Why some perfumes last and others vanish
A perfume disappears from the top down. Citrus and green notes are small, volatile molecules that evaporate within the hour; resins, woods, musks and vanillins are heavy and cling to skin for eight hours or more. So the longest-lasting bottles are almost always the ones whose base is amber, oud, sandalwood, patchouli, tonka or vanilla.
Concentration is the second lever. Eau de parfum and extrait carry more perfume oil than eau de toilette, and the same fragrance in a higher concentration will usually outlast its lighter version. Skin matters too — dry skin releases scent faster, which is why applying to moisturised skin noticeably extends wear.
